Computer Service and Repair Tips

If your computer is running slow or you think there is something wrong with it, taking your computer to a repair shop can be costly and troublesome. However, if you know where and what look for, you can do most computer repairs from your home, saving you both time and money.

Defragmenting

An easy fix is to defragment your computer, a simple process that can take as little as a few minutes. During a defragment, the computer finds, sorts, stores and organizes your files, making the computer run quicker and allowing your programs to run more efficiently. Defragmenting your hard drive also helps your computer multitask, as running several programs doesn't take up as much memory.
Virus Scan

Another common practice is running a virus scan. Every time you download a video or MP3 off unmonitored websites or visit webpages, you run the risk of downloading viruses. While most computer viruses are little more than minor nuisances, some can be taxing on your computer's RAM. This slows down the computer and can even lead to Windows shutting down due to lack of available memory. Virus scans can find these malicious little buggers and "nuke them" by quarantining and deleting them from your hard drive.
Hardware Check

Sometimes incompatible or outdated hardware can have an adverse effect on a computer's performance. For example, older motherboards can't read newer RAM types and vice versa. Using them will disrupt your computer's operation, and, in fact, can damage it. If you think your computer problems may stem from a hardware problem, be sure to know where to look. If for instance your computer is restarting or shutting down frequently, check your power source. If your computer runs slow check your RAM or your processor.
